Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

This is why I’m a humanist and a little agnostic. I’ve got better shit to do with my time than waste it worrying about what will happen after I die. Like saving the world.

We must make it clear that a platform of ‘I hate gay men and women’ is not a way to become president of the United States.

Jimmy Carter, relevant now more than ever. (via gaywrites)

Jimmy Carter is so BAMFY, it hurts. There’s also this.

Former President Jimmy Carter issued a statement Sunday announcing he is severing all ties with the Southern Baptist Church due to their treatment of women. A devout Southern Baptist for more than sixty years, Carter left the church in 2000 because of ideologically differences where the religion justifies the subordination of women. His announcementcomes after the Elders, a group of world leaders with which Carter is affiliated, released a statement on the issue of discrimination against women and girls by religion. In his statement, Carter calls “on all leaders to challenge and change the harmful teachings and practices, no matter how ingrained, which justify discrimination against women.”

Atheists are routinely asked how people will know not to rape and murder without religion telling them not to do it, especially a religion that backs up the orders with threats of hell. Believers, listen to me carefully when I say this: When you use this argument, you terrify atheists. We hear you saying that the only thing standing between you and Ted Bundy is a flimsy belief in a supernatural being made up by pre-literate people trying to figure out where the rain came from. This is not very reassuring if you’re trying to argue from a position of moral superiority.

10 Myths Many Religious People Hold About Atheists, Debunked (via sourdoughislife)

I’m not an atheist but this is probably the worst argument for religion I’ve ever heard. Who cares what someone believes in? Just be a good person.

(via livingwithintention)

Hahaha, I’m agnostic because I’ve got better things to waste my time doing than worrying about religion/atheism. BUT THIS. SO MUCH THIS.

“You may not realize this, but the Catholic Church actually offers health plans that cover Viagra — a.k.a. (the) ‘boner pill.’ …I’m guessing that that doesn’t ‘rape the soul.’  That some of your employees, I guess, are getting that subsidized Viagra.  And I guess that some of them are single, unmarried men.  What do you think they’re doing with their erections?  Seriously, we’d love to know.  Send your responses to Brian Williams, care of NBC Nightly News.”

I think there are lots of people who live on the edge of existence who have to really fight to live. I do think that they might sin in a conventional sense and I’m not saying they rape and murder but there are huge struggles going on in this world so I disagree I thinks it’s very universal. I think in cultures whether they’re religions or whether they’re experiences that you have in a certain social setting one of the things that something like religion can give you sometimes is they give you a certain moral compass. Like the old man is the moral compass he’s the person who gives the Creature his intellectual world, the idea of what his place in the world of ideas is and that’s where his self consciousness is. It’s not just language and understanding of what’s good and bad its also cycling it through a very particular cultural input. He doesn’t believe that you are born bad. You can do good and it’s up to you and what I’m saying is it shapes his world and I think we’re the same. I think we explore religion down through history you can see it across Africa and countless other places and continents and it’s something that people are then beholden to live by and be very aware of even though their actual circumstances will be high ideals which will have been placed on them by foreign…I’m going on a bit aren’t I?

Benedict Cumberbatch speaking on Religion (Frankenstein Q&A)

I have taken extensive courses on Buddhist thought, tradition and philosophy, so I’ve had to deal with my fair share of trying to comprehend the incomprehensible….but I don’t fucking understand what the hell he’s trying to say here…

I just wish the phrase “religion can give you…a certain moral compass” hadn’t been used…..egh. Just eeeeeeehhhhhhhhgggggg.
